🚘 Transport

American companies Glīd and Mendocino Railway will debut the first autonomous hybrid truck capable of operating on both roads and rails, revolutionizing shortline freight transport in California. Running along the iconic Skunk Train corridor, the GliderM and AR2RV vehicles aim to cut emissions, revitalize rural logistics, and model sustainable infrastructure. This pilot blends historic rail heritage with cutting-edge automation to reshape freight mobility in underserved regions.

The U.S. successfully tested the Stratolaunch Talon-A, a reusable hypersonic vehicle that exceeded Mach 5 and safely landed, marking the first reusable hypersonic flight since 1968. Conducted under the Pentagon’s MACH-TB program, the test advances rapid, cost-effective development of hypersonic systems by enabling quick turnaround between missions. The vehicle was launched mid-air by the Roc carrier aircraft.

🦾 Robotics

Researchers at Laurentian University have developed a deep learning system that allows knitting robots to automatically convert fabric photos into precise machine-readable instructions, achieving over 97% accuracy across 5,000 textile samples. The model uses a two-step process: first simplifying the image into a blueprint of surface stitches, then generating full instructions for both visible and hidden layers. Published in Electronics, the technology could revolutionize textile manufacturing by enabling fully automated, image-driven production—though it also raises concerns about labor displacement in global garment industries.

💉 Biotechnology

Scientists at the University of California, Davis have genetically deleted a cluster of alpha-gliadin genes in wheat—proteins known to trigger celiac disease—without reducing the crop’s yield, weight, or breadmaking quality. Published in Theoretical and Applied Genetics, the study shows that these modified wheat varieties can reduce allergenic risk while maintaining or even improving flour performance. The seeds are now publicly available and have already drawn interest from artisanal bakers and wheat growers.

💊 Healthcare

American neurosurgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center successfully removed a spinal tumor by accessing it through a patient’s eye socket, a world-first surgical feat. The 19-hour operation, involving coordinated access through both nostrils and the eye, avoided higher-risk routes and preserved vital structures near the spinal cord. Detailed in a recent report, the technique could pave the way for safer removal of deep skull base and spinal tumors in the future.

Chinese scientists have developed a soft, wireless, battery-free patch—dubbed NanoFLUID—that delivers drugs directly into organs with high precision by safely perforating cell membranes using low-voltage pulses. Created by researchers at Beihang University and Peking University, the flexible electronic patch boosts delivery speeds up to 105 times faster than traditional diffusion and was tested in cancer and liver injury models. Published in Nature, the innovation also aids in disease analysis by identifying molecular drivers like DUS2 in lung metastasis.
