💻 Technology
Equal1, a spin-off from University College Dublin, has introduced Bell-1, the first silicon-based quantum computer that operates from a standard power socket. Unlike traditional quantum systems requiring bulky dilution refrigerators, Bell-1 integrates a closed-cycle cryocooler to achieve 0.3 Kelvin, making it compact and energy-efficient. Using silicon spin qubits combined with classical processors on a single chip, this innovation enables easier integration into existing high-performance computing data centers. While it currently operates with six qubits, the breakthrough paves the way for more scalable and accessible quantum computing solutions.
Scientists at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) have created a nanoscale quantum resonant tunneling diode (RTD) that mimics sensory neurons by detecting light and converting it into electrical signals. This compact device processes optical data using quantum effects, reducing the need for large, power-hungry processors. Its ability to encode optical information into rhythmic electrical bursts could revolutionize artificial vision, autonomous vehicles, and ultra-fast robotics. The study was published in Scientific Reports.
⚡️ Energy
BASF, in partnership with Siemens Energy, has launched a 54MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer at its Ludwigshafen site, marking Germany’s largest green hydrogen project. The system produces up to one ton of hydrogen per hour using renewable energy, reducing annual emissions by 72,000 metric tons. The hydrogen will be used for chemical production and mobility in the Rhine-Neckar region, supporting industrial decarbonization. This project, backed by €124.3 million in government funding, advances Europe’s hydrogen economy.
🚘 Transport
Scientists at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) have created an 18-micrometer-thick solid electrolyte membrane, significantly thinner than previous versions. This breakthrough increases the energy density of all-solid-state batteries by up to 10 times while improving safety by eliminating flammable liquid electrolytes. The dry manufacturing process also removes the need for harmful solvents, making production more sustainable. This innovation paves the way for smaller, lighter, and more efficient next-generation EV batteries.
🌎 Sustainability
Google, in partnership with the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space, has launched the first satellite in the FireSat constellation, designed to detect wildfires early and track them in real time. Unlike existing systems, which detect only large fires and update every 12 hours, FireSat can identify fires as small as 25 square meters and provide updates every 20 minutes using AI-powered infrared imaging. The constellation, set to reach over 50 satellites by 2030, could significantly improve wildfire response and prevention, reducing damage and loss.
💉 Biotechnology
Scientists at North Carolina State University have created a new technique for encapsulating beneficial plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs) in an emulsion, allowing them to be stored and applied alongside agrochemicals like pesticides and fertilizers. This method stabilizes bacteria such as Pseudomonas simiae and Azospirillum brasilense, enhancing plant health and reducing reliance on chemical inputs. The study found that bacteria in the emulsion survived significantly longer and that pesticides integrated into the system provided sustained pest control. The innovation could lead to more effective, eco-friendly agricultural solutions. The research was published in Advanced Functional Materials.
This cannabis startup pioneered “rapid onset” gummies
