🦾 Robotics
China has deployed the world’s first human-free wind farm in the Ningxia desert, where four-legged inspection robots, drones, and smart sensors now replace human workers. Developed by China Three Gorges and Goldwind, the 70-megawatt site uses DEEP Robotics' X30 robot dogs to autonomously monitor over 5,000 inspection points, ensuring operational efficiency even in harsh and remote environments. This breakthrough demonstrates the scalability of “dark” renewable infrastructure and marks a key step in China's drive toward fully automated industrial systems.
Skild AI has introduced Skild Brain, a general-purpose AI model that enables robots, from humanoids to manipulators, to perform complex tasks with human-like adaptability. Unlike vision-language models that struggle with physical execution, Skild Brain is trained using simulated and real-world robot data, allowing it to react to environmental changes, maintain balance under duress, and improve continuously across deployments. This breakthrough offers a scalable foundation for versatile robots in industries where single-purpose machines fall short.
🌎 Sustainability
🇬🇧 🇨🇳 British-Chinese innovators create carbon-storing bricks that purify air and reduce construction emissions
Engineers at earth4Earth (e4E) have developed a new type of eco-brick that captures carbon dioxide from the air, transforming buildings into passive carbon sinks. Made from waste soil and a proprietary lime-based binder produced at room temperature, the bricks permanently store CO2 and reduce emissions typically released during traditional binder manufacturing. With pilot use already underway in the UK and production expanding, this innovation could significantly decarbonize the global construction industry.
💊 Healthcare
Researchers in the US have created a swallowable capsule that wirelessly communicates with engineered gut bacteria to detect and treat inflammation in real time. In pig trials, the capsule identified colitis-linked chemical signals via bioluminescent E. coli and then triggered these microbes to release anti-inflammatory antibodies using LED light. Published in Nature Microbiology, the study shows how smart capsules and microbial therapies could transform personalized treatment of gut diseases like IBD.
